What is an Aupair?

An Aupair is a single person aged 17 to 27 years old seeking to learn or improve the language of their chosen country. UK immigration law permits such persons from a list of designated countries to reside in the UK for up to two years with families here where they help out with child care and domestic chores.

The Home Office website has detailed information regarding visas and eligibility.

Aupairs are not trained or qualified child minders. It is therefore essential that clear instructions are set by the host family when the Aupair is in charge of the children.

Aupairs are not trained domestic servants and as such are not responsible for all the household duties.

The Aupair is expected to help with light housework, childcare, and preparation of food for the children; for up to 5 hours a day or a maximum of 25 hours per week. In addition two evenings of babysitting per week would be part of the requirement.

Light housework will include tidying up, washing, ironing, dusting, vacuum cleaning and washing up at meal time

The Aupair receive pocket money of £75 minimum per week. In special cases where the Aupair worked for extra hours via the request of the host family, the Aupair must be compensated with extra pocket money; a minimum of £3.00 per hours.

The Aupair must be allowed two free days per week, and free periods when they can pursue other personal interests.

The host family must provide full board for the Aupair, this will include food and private bedroom within the family home. The bedroom must be suitable for sleeping, studying and relaxing in.

The host family must treat the Aupair as valued member of the family. The Aupair must be made welcome to share in the social life of the host family. The Aupair is not a servant and should be treated in the same way the host family would wish their own children to be treated in a similar situation.
